Reasons for Considering a Breast Lift:
- Elevate the breasts due to sagging caused by the effects of aging and gravity.
- Firm the breasts if they have lost substance due to pregnancy and subsequent breast-feeding.
- Re-align your nipples/areolas if they point down or to the side.
- Bring back natural suppleness after weight loss.
How Breast Lift Surgery Is Performed
This procedure may use a variety of techniques and three incisions may be necessary:
- One incision travels around the areola
- Another travels vertically from the bottom of the areola to the breast crease
- The third incision travels horizontally within the breast crease
Dr. Setty usually performs breast lift surgery using the first 2 incisions and only ads the third one if there is a significant excess amount of skin.
Excess skin and glandular tissue is removed and the breasts are lifted up into a more youthful position. After surgery is complete, the patient may have a slightly reduced breast size but enhanced position and enhanced breast firmness. If increased size is desired, a breast augmentation with lift can be performed.
A special bra is provided for you to wear during recovery, during which time you may experience some swelling, bruising and discomfort. After about a week, most of these temporary side effects should be resolved, and the results of your breast lift procedure will begin to take shape. Final results including uplifted, perkier breasts may be seen a few months after the procedure.
Generally, post-operative instructions call for plenty rest and limited movement in order to speed up the healing process and recovery time. Bandages are applied right after surgery to aid the healing process and to minimize movement of the breasts. A small, thin tube may be temporarily placed under the skin to drain any excess blood or fluid that may collect. Once the bandages are removed, the patient will need to wear a specialized surgical bra for several weeks. Patients sometimes report minor pain associated with surgery which can be treated with oral medication. While complications are rare, patients can minimize potential problems by carefully following the post-operative directions given by the surgeon.
