Tummy Tuck

Individuals who are unhappy with the appearance of their waistline may be interested in tummy tuck surgery. A tummy tuck, also known as an “abdominoplasty,” surgically improves the shape and appearance of the waistline. Specifically, a tummy tuck tightens loose stomach muscles, removes excess abdominal skin, and eliminates unwanted belly fat to create a smoother and flatter abdomen. Individuals who have diastasis recti, loose abdominal skin, and stubborn fat after pregnancy or weight gain can significantly improve their body shape with tummy tuck surgery.

About Tummy Tuck Surgery

Ideal Candidates

  • Have excess skin around their waist and abdomen
  • Have stretched, loose abdominal muscles
  • Have excess stomach fat
  • Are healthy non-smokers
  • Have a stable body weight
  • Have a desire to improve their body shape

What It Does

  • Removes excess skin around the waist and abdomen
  • Tightens stretched, loose abdominal muscles
  • Eliminates excess stomach fat
  • Flattens and smooths the tummy

How It Is Performed

  • An incision is made across the waist between the hips
  • Excess skin is trimmed away
  • The abdominal wall is tightened to improve stomach contour
  • A limited amount of fat is removed via liposuction

Time Frame

Most patients will need approximately two weeks to recover from tummy tuck surgery before they are ready to return to work. Some swelling and discomfort may occur after surgery and may last up to six weeks. The typical recovery period after abdominoplasty is six to eight weeks. You will receive more details about what to expect during your recovery during your consultation.

Some discomfort is common during the first few weeks after tummy tuck surgery. This is only temporary and can be controlled by prescription oral medication.
Medications will be provided to alleviate discomfort and prevent infection. Laxatives may also be provided for your benefit during the first week of recovery.
There will be some scarring after your tummy tuck procedure; however, Dr. Setty will place the surgical incision in a location that can be hidden under clothing. This scar will fade with the passage of time. We also encourage the use of several scar therapies such as Embrace that can allow active participation by you to decrease the visibility of the scars with time. Read our blog post, Embrace Scar Therapy for Tummy Tuck/Breast Surgery, to learn more about Embrace.
Patients should plan to limit themselves to light activities such as short walks around the block to improve circulation during the first few weeks. It is best to avoid strenuous physical activity for a full six weeks after abdominoplasty. Exercise should be reintroduced gradually, and abdominal exercises should only be introduced after the body is ready to engage in more intense cardio and strength training exercises.

About the Procedure

Frequently Asked Questions

If you only need the removal of abdominal fat and do not have loose stomach muscles or excess skin, liposuction may be appropriate for you. If you also need removal of excess skin and tightening of your stomach muscles, tummy tuck surgery may be more appropriate. During your consultation, Dr. Setty will determine which procedure is more appropriate for your needs.
Tummy tuck surgery can be combined with other procedures such as liposuction and breast surgery to create a more attractive body shape.
Like any surgical procedure, abdominoplasty does present some risks. Although rare, these risks may include fluid accumulation, poor wound healing, bleeding, numbness, blood clots, and dissatisfaction with the results, among others. Dr. Setty will discuss the risks and benefits of abdominoplasty with you during your consultation.
In addition to its aesthetic benefits, tummy tuck surgery is associated with a few health benefits. The removal of excess stomach fat can reduce the risk of developing certain related health problems. The procedure has also been proven to reduce stress urinary incontinence and improve posture. For many patients, the results of abdominoplasty also help to improve self-confidence and self-image.
Abdominoplasty is an elective procedure and not usually covered by medical insurance.
Tummy tuck surgery does not affect a woman’s ability to become pregnant or bear children. Nonetheless, pregnancy can eliminate the benefits of tummy tuck surgery. Therefore, it is best for women to wait to undergo abdominoplasty until they have finished having children.
The best time to undergo tummy tuck surgery is when you meet the above criteria for ideal candidates. Be sure that you are close to your ideal body weight, that your weight is stable, that you are in good physical health, and that you are not planning to have more children in the future.
The results of a tummy tuck are long lasting. Patients should maintain a healthy body weight and avoid having children in the future if they desire long-term results.
